Over 2500 people (2,513) have died in 2,414 fatal road accidents, but the National Audit Office points out that police stations do not possess an adequate number of equipment to detect errant drivers who exceed the speed limit.
In 2016, 25-speed limit testing machines were purchased.
05 of these devices were given to Anuradhapura, Kurunegala, Gampaha, Kelaniya and Nugegoda police divisions where the number of deaths in fatal road accidents exceeded 100 last year.
However, the audit office revealed that the speed limit devices purchased in 2010 and 2014 were either out of order or in need of repair.
Fatal accidents have increased in the last year compared to 2020. 2363 people died in 2242 fatal road accidents in 2020.
