PM postpones the meeting on New Fortress deals with party leaders

Prime Minister’s discussion given to the party leaders of the ruling government over the handing over of Kerawalapitiya Yuugadhanawi Power Station has been postponed to tomorrow, Parliamentary sources said. The party leaders, who expressed their concern over the deal to hand over 40 per cent of the shares and some of its infrastructure to the US New Fortress Energy Company were noticed that the meeting has been rescheduled for tomorrow.

The Prime Minister’s Office has informed the relevant party leaders that it will be difficult for Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa to participate in the discussion today and that the discussion will be held tomorrow (23) at Temple Trees.

It is reported that former President Maithripala Sirisena has joined the representatives of the parties opposing this controversial agreement. According to political sources, the leaders of the parties representing the government who are currently in a state of opposition in this regard visited the former President’s residence at Keppetipola Mawatha last night and held an emergency discussion.

Mr Maithripala Sirisena has expressed his regret over the confusing manner in which he, as the leader of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, had awarded the tender to the company, and told the other party leaders that future steps to be taken in this regard were also discussed at length, the sources said. The party leaders were scheduled to hold discussions with the Prime Minister today and had lengthy discussions last night on matters to be presented to the Prime Minister.
