Saliya Peiris and Kuvera de Zoysa to battle it out for Bar Association Presidency

Over the weekend President’s Counsels Saliya Peiris and Kuvera de Zoysa both announced their intention to contest at the upcoming Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) for the term 2021/2022. 

Saliya Pieris PC heads his Law Chambers, practising in the areas of Criminal law, Public law and Fundamental Rights in the Appellate and Original Courts.

He was appointed in February 2018 as the first Chairman of the Office on Missing Persons. Between October 2015 to March 2018 he was a Member of the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka. He was Deputy President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka from 2015 to 2017. 

Pieris been an advocate for the strengthening of human rights, a strong and independent Bar in Sri Lanka and consistently stood for the Rule of Law and the Independence of the judiciary. He played a prominent role in the lawyers’ campaign against the impeachment of Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake of Sri Lanka. He is also a lecturer in law and has contributed many papers and articles on law and politics. 

He holds a Masters Degree in International Business Law from the University of London and is an Eisenhower Fellow, an alumnus of the Dealing With the Past (DwP) Programme, Switzerland and IVLP, USA. 

Meanwhile, Kuvera de Zoysa PC has over 25 years of experience as a leading practitioner in commercial and civil law. He was the Chairman of the Social and Welfare Committee of the BASL in 2017, Chairman of the Junior Bar Committee in 2018 and 2019 (which oversees the affairs of over 8,000 members of the Junior Bar), as a resource person in continuous learning and educational programs of the BASL in the areas of Intellectual Property Law, Civil Procedure, Commercial Litigation, Arbitration and Company Law.
