Man in Mundalama tries to self immolate to avoid PCR testing

The Mundalama Police have reported that a group of people had threatened to self immolate in protest against being taken for PCR testing.

According to reports following the identification of Covid 19 patients in three houses located in Udappuwa belonging to the Mundalama Police Division, health officials had directed the tier one contacts to self-isolate and quarantine in their homes.

The health officials thereafter had instructed the persons to visit the maternity clinic in Pulichchikulama, Mundalama on February 8 in order to get PCR tested. However, the persons had not visited the clinic prompting the PHI in charge of the area M.M Janaka to go in search for them.

Sources said when the PHI had visited the area, the people had become argumentative causing a tense situation during which one man had threatened to self immolate if he is forcefully taken for PCR testing.

The incident had then been reported to the Mundalama MOH A.R Jauzeer who in turn had informed the Police. Samples for testing were collected thereafter with the assistance of the Police.
