Two ladies of Agriculture Department arrested for KARUNKA scam

An Assistant Director of Agriculture and Agriculture Instructor of the Department of Agriculture has been taken into custody by the CID in connection with an illegal reexport of a container of areca nuts (Karunka) imported from Indonesia by preparing fake quarantine documents, said the Police spokesman Senior DIG Ajith Rohana.

The consignment of areca nuts was imported to Sri Lanka in August 2020 and the two have barely alleged to preparing forged quarantine documents without a physical examination, the police spokesman further said.

The CID had commenced investigations into a complaint lodged with the CID by the Customs.

Several people, including a customs chief, had been arrested in connection with the incident.
