The Assistant High Commission of India, in collaboration with Sri Dalada Maligawa, government entities, and various organizations, came together in a grand celebration of World Environment Day 2023.
The sacred grounds of Sri Dalada Maligawa served as the backdrop for this significant event.
The theme for this year’s World Environment Day was ‘Solutions to Plastic Pollution,’ highlighting the urgent need to address the global crisis of plastic waste.
Esteemed individuals, including Acting Diyawadana Nilame, Mahinda Dela, Chief of Indigenous people, Uruwarige Wannila Aththo, Assistant High Commissioner of India in Kandy, Dr. Athira S., Central Province Buddhist Affairs Commissioner, WMAH Bandara, and Central Province Environment Authority Director, Geethanjali Senevirathne.
The ceremony commenced with a moment of silence and heartfelt condolences for the victims of a tragic train accident in Odisha.
The event featured speeches highlighting the importance of nature and tree planting, as well as the launch of Mission LiFE, emphasizing sustainable practices.
To further propagate the message of environmental conservation and reduce plastic usage in daily life, a vibrant plant distribution booth, known as the Dansela, was set up at Maha Maluva. A total of 1,500 plants were distributed among enthusiastic students and visitors, symbolizing a commitment to nurturing and protecting nature.
Adding an artistic touch to the event, school students from the Central Province captivated the audience with captivating street dramas, creatively portraying the importance of environmental awareness and the need to curb plastic pollution.
The occasion also celebrated the winners of various competitions held in schools across the Central Province in connection with World Environment Day. Certificates, prizes, books, and plants were bestowed upon the deserving champions, recognizing their exemplary efforts in promoting environmental consciousness and sustainable practices.
