Nishantha Kottegoda, chairman of the newly opened Hantane birds park and eco-tourism zone, revealed today (20) in front of the president that some government officials demanded a luxury bus as a ransom in order to provide the necessary government support while the initial stages of his project. Describing the form of state obstacles in the establishment of this international bird park and eco-tourism zone with an area of 27 acres located next to the Hantane Tea Museum premises at a cost of 490 million rupees, the chairman said: “Despite various obstacles, we were able to complete the first phase of this park this year. In order to proceed with this project, the government officials asked for a super luxury bus that could run from Colombo to Kandy as a bribe. This project had to be stopped many years ago because it could not be provided.” “Somehow we have been able to open the first phase today.”He said. Located adjacent to the Hantane Tea Museum premises, this 27-acre international bird park and ecotourism zone is home to over a hundred species of migratory birds. In this bird park, exotic birds are allowed to live in large cages and there are nearly a hundred workers to take care of them. This park has been established on the basis of a 40-year “study of birds that are not native to Sri Lanka” and it is also special that many exotic birds can be bred in Sri Lanka. Under the first phase, facilities for local and foreign tourists to watch migratory birds, an educational training center for zoology students, a bird orphanage, a bird home. And a quarantine unit has been established. A unit for the treatment and release of injured birds has also been established in this park, which consists of birds native to foreign countries, migratory birds, etc.
