Gov should address social concerns about militarization of the public service

Karu Jayasuriya

The National Movement for a Just Society emphasizes that the government should pay close attention to the social concerns that have arisen from the unnecessary addition of military personnel to the public service.

Former Speaker Karu Jayasuriya, Chairman of the National Movement for a Just Society raised these issues at a media briefing held this week with eminent senior officials of the Sri Lanka Administrative Service, trade union leaders and civil activists. While noting that the military and the civil service both belong to the public service, Jayasuriya said the deployment of military personnel in the civil service or the deployment of civilians in the military should never be done.

Pointing out that this situation is a serious threat to the well-being of the country as well as to the democratic foundation that has been nurtured in Sri Lanka for decades, a number of former top officials of the civil service stressed that the entire political leadership of the country should pay serious attention to this.
