Galle Deputy Mayor apologizes to Medical Officer of Health (VIDEO)

The Deputy Mayor of Galle Fauzul Niyas has written to the Governor of the Southern Province Dr. Willy Gamage apologizing for the manner in which he recently addressed the Galle Municipal Council Medical Officer of Health Dr. Bertram de Silva. According to Dr. Manjula de Zoysa, Secretary of the Galle District Branch of the Government Medical Officers’ Association, Niyas has written to the governor to express his regret over the incident and his conduct.

The Galle District Branch of the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) had demanded an apology from the Deputy Mayor for threatening to reprimand the Medical Officer of Health. The Governor of the Southern Province, Dr. Willy Gamage had written to Dr. de Zoysa informing him that the Deputy Mayor had informed him of the incident and explained his behaviour. The letter also states that Niyas had said he regrets the manner in which he addressed the Medical Officer of Health at the time of the incident in question.

The incident caught on video

Dr. Manjula de Zoysa said the Governor of the Southern Province, Dr. Willy Gamage had also noted that he was not satisfied with the manner in which the Deputy Mayor had behaved during the incident and that he should have exercised more restraint as a representative of the people.

The letter states that the Governor of the Southern Province had sent a letter to the Deputy Mayor warning and admonishing him regarding the incident.
