Former Mahara Prison Superintendent Jagath Weerasinghe suspended

Jagath Chandana Weerasinghe, who was the Superintendent of the Mahara Prison, has been suspended with immediate effect.

He has been suspended over an incident where he had given permission for an inmate to receive a parcel of food from outside despite all such deliveries having been stopped due to Covid 19. It was also revealed that the parcel had contained two mobile phones.

Jagath Chandana Weerasinghe was the Superintendent of the Mahara Prison at the time of the Mahara Prison clash.

He was not at the prison premises on the day of the incident, but in his statements to the relevant investigators, he had stated that he was in the prison at the time of the incident prison sources said. He is facing charges regarding the conflicting statements as well.

Although Jagath Chandana Weerasinghe was transferred from Mahara to the prison headquarters as a service requirement after the clash, he was not given any specific responsibility, prison sources said.
