Former J’pura hospital Doctor becomes focus of terror investigation

An information report has been handed over to IGP C.D Wickramaratne by a Senior Superintendent of Police for further investigations into a doctor and his activities who is allegedly spreading Islamic extremism in Akkaraipattu.

Initial investigations have revealed that this doctor, who had previously worked as a doctor at the Sri Jayewardenepura Hospital for some time, is running carrying out his activities on a 4 acre land on Sagama Road, Akkaraipattu and is currently living in secret.

The man identified as Dr. Riyaz, an extremist propagandist, is said to be carrying out the radicalization of Muslim youth on the internet in the same manner as the extremist leader Zaharan Hashim, and that he also runs a YouTube channel and a Facebook page called ‘Super Muslim’.

He employs a local Maulavi and two Arabs and a Pakistani nationals for his sermons but he does not appear in public, police say.

It has been revealed that university students are participating in the sermons organized by him and various training sessions have been conducted for them at the center in Akkaraipattu.

It has been revealed that this doctor had been running the Tsunami Relief Fund after the 2004 tsunami disaster and had received foreign aid for it and that this person is still receiving foreign aid for his work.
