Federal prosecutors intend to seek an indictment of Hunter Biden, the son of US President Joe Biden, by the end of this month, according to court documents. It is unclear what charges will be filed by justice department special counsel David Weiss.
A plea bargain that was being considered to resolve tax and gun counts faced by Hunter Biden fell apart in July. These legal issues involving the President’s son have become a major political issue as Joe Biden seeks re-election.
Hunter Biden is facing allegations related to tax evasion and illegal possession of a firearm.
In July, a plea deal that would have spared Hunter Biden prison time was not approved by the judge overseeing the case. He ultimately pleaded not guilty to two counts of failure to pay federal taxes on income of more than $1.5 million annually from 2017-18. David Weiss, who was nominated by former President Trump, has been criticized by Republicans for his handling of the case.
The issue of Hunter Biden’s business dealings has also been a point of contention, with some Congressional Republicans considering an impeachment investigation of President Biden, alleging that he played a role in his son’s foreign business affairs.
