In an incident at the W15 Hotel near the Pelena Roundabout on the New Galle Road in Weligama, a police officer from the Colombo Crime Division lost his life, and another officer sustained injuries. The incident unfolded as a group, arrived in a van and opened fire at the hotel.
A police vehicle from the Weligama Police, engaged in drug operations, was nearby with army officers involved in a joint operation. Upon receiving the report, the police vehicle pursued the van, which had fled after hitting the police vehicle. In the chase, shots were fired, and the van managed to escape.
The Weligama Police relayed information about the fleeing vehicle to other police stations and security forces. When the van attempted to enter the highway at the Imaduwa entrance, highway security police stopped and checked the occupants. Despite presenting identity cards from the Colombo Crime Division, the group was not allowed to enter the highway initially. However, following an order from a senior police officer, they were eventually released.
Subsequently, it was discovered that the individuals involved, associated with the Colombo Crime Division, were responsible for the shooting at the W15 Hotel. A police sergeant lost his life due to excessive bleeding, and a sub-inspector from the Colombo Crime Division was seriously injured. Both were admitted to Karapitiya Teaching Hospital.
The W15 hotels, owned by the son of AJM Muzammil, are located in several provinces across the island. The police are actively investigating the incident.
