Crisis worsens in Kandy & Teldeniya as lack of Oxigen facilities

Two Covid treating Hospitals, Kandy National Hospital and Teldeniya are facing a serious crisis due to the lack of oxygen supply facilities to the patients although they have sufficient oxygen, health sources said.

Currently, there are about 35 patients who are struggling with death due to lack of facilities in these hospitals the sources said.

According to them Covid Intensive Care Units at Teldeniya and Kandy Hospitals are overcrowded.
At present, in addition to the 20 patients receiving treatment at Ward 26 the dedicated ward for Covid patients, in NHK 50 patients have been found in other medical Wards. The health sources say among them there are 15 patients in in need with severe oxygen requirements.

Meanwhile the sources say one third of the 120 patients at the Teldeniya Hospital who are in need of oxygen.

Of these, 20 are in critical condition and three patients died at the Teldeniya Hospital yesterday due to lack of oxygen. The bodies of the deceased are to be cremated under Covid quarantine procedures.

They confirm that there are currently 88 Covid patients in the Peradeniya Hospital and that all six beds in the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital are reserved for critically ill Covid patients.

According to the above sources, forcasting on the requirements the hospital administrations have written to the Ministry of Health six months ago to provide faclilities of oxygen to the hospitals in anticipation of such a situation.

However, the Covid Treatment Unit of Wards 17, 18 and 12 at the Peradeniya Hospital has commenced treatment by improving the oxygen supply facilities.

As of yesterday, 337 infected patients were reported from the Kandy district. 37 of them are within the city limits of Kandy.

At present there are 120 patients at the Teldeniya Hospital, 70 at the Kandy Hospital, 30 at the Katugastota Hospital including 30 pregnant mothers, 88 at the Peradeniya Hospital, 06 at the Kadugannawa Hospital, 35 at the Wattegama Treatment Center and 40 at the Akurana Covid Treatment Center.

150 patients at Gampola Intermediate Treatment Center, 300 patients at Polgolla Treatment Center and 140 patients at Pallekele Treatment Center where asymptomatic patients are detained. 350 are being treated at the Panideniya Treatment Center and 26 at the Giragama Treatment Center.
