Dr. Krishantha Perera, an oncologist at Karapitiya Teaching Hospital, has been arrested by the Galle police following allegations of assaulting a minor employee at the hospital. The arrest took place while the specialist was receiving treatment at a private hospital in Galle.
The police confirmed that a B report detailing the facts of the incident will be submitted to the court. The arrest followed a protest initiated by the entire staff of Karapitiya Teaching Hospital, demanding the immediate arrest of the accused specialist in connection with the alleged assault.
A discussion between the protestors and the hospital director took place, and the police, in coordination with the hospital director, took measures to address the situation. As a result, the initial protest has come to an end.
The incident originated from a clash between Dr. Krishantha Perera and junior staff members who were part of a strike on Tuesday (16). The specialist doctor allegedly blamed the junior staff in his ward for the strike, leading to a heated confrontation. A protest ensued, alleging that the doctor had assaulted a minor employee. The situation prompted the arrest of Dr. Krishantha Perera by Galle police.
