The Constitutional Council (CC) has postponed the approval of Attorney General Sanjay Rajaratnam’s service extension, recommended by the President, for six months. The decision was made after members of the CC met yesterday (10). During the meeting, members of the CC decided that the matter should be further discussed before approving the service extension.
According to regulations, the approval of the CC is mandatory for the service extension of the Attorney General. Meanwhile, Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena has stated that the CC is scheduled to meet again on the 18th. The Speaker has said that the CC expects to reach a final agreement regarding the extension of the Attorney General’s service.
Attorney General Sanjay Rajaratnam will retire at the end of this month. However, there is strong opposition in society to the President’s decision to recommend a service extension for the Attorney General.
