Congress Party criticizes BJP attempt to enter Sri Lankan politics

India’s Congress Party has criticized the claims that the country’s ruling party, the Bharatiya Janatha Party (BJP) is seeking to expand into and establish itself in Sri Lanka.

The Congress Party along with the Communist Party of India has said the statement made by the Chief Minister of Tripura, Biplab Deb on the BJP expanding into Sri Lanka in order to form a government is a threat to another country’s sovereignty and democracy. The party’s said an investigation should be carried out about Deb’s comments.

At a BJP event in Tripura state capital Agartala, Biplab Deb said the party has plans not only to expand across the country but in neighbouring nations as well. Biplab Deb said Home Minister Amit Shah has plans to set up BJP governments in Nepal and Sri Lanka.

Amit Shah is considered to be a close confidante of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The comments made by Deb have stirred controversy in both India and Sri Lanka.
