Colombo Uni lecturers write to PM opposing UDA land acquisition

The University of Colombo Faculty of Arts Lecturer’s Association has sent a letter to Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa stating that it strongly opposes the acquisition of the two acre land on which the Muttiah Hostel of the University of Colombo is located for an urgent development project by the Urban Development Authority.

According to the letter issued to the media, about 550 female students of the University of Colombo are being accommodated at the Muttiah Hostel including a large number of students with different abilities.

The letter further states that the Muttiah Hostel is a convenient place for students to pursue their studies without any hindrance.

The lecturers pointed out that they are surprised that the Urban Development Authority (UDA) has taken steps to acquire this land without any discussion with the lecturers and without providing any other hostel facilities to the students.

The Faculty of Arts Lecturers Association has urged Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa to reconsider the above order of the Urban Development Authority.
