Additional bonus seats for provincial councils

The amended bill of the Provincial Council election has proposed to increase the number of bonus seats for a province Lankasara learns.
The bill was presented to the Cabinet by Minister Janaka Bandara Tennakoon yesterday (29).

A political party that wins a province currently holds two bonus seats for the province. The new bill proposes to increase that number to two bonus seats per district depending on the number of districts entering the province.

The bill further proposes that 70 percent of the members should be elected under the divisional system and 30 percent under the proportional representation system and that three candidates from each party should be nominated for each division.
The President has stated that it would be more appropriate to call a meeting of the party leaders and take a final decision after informing all political parties regarding the new proposals.

The President has said that it would be more democratic to hold a provincial council meeting and discuss the changes at the party leadership meeting and reach a final decision.
