It is revealed that more than a thousand tons of polythene and product raw materials including thin plastic granules were stored in the containers of the X press Pearl ship. Sources told Lankasara that they had stored plastic, polythene and PVC products and raw materials in 87 containers.
The ship was carrying at least 25,000 bags of low-density polythene (LDPE) and high-density polythene (HDPE) used in the manufacture of polythene and plastics each bag contains 25 KGs. The consignment was also transported in 31 containers containing 3,400 bags of 50 kg. The ship’s inventory contains 55 containers of polythene and plastic. Many containers containing these polythene products had fallen into the sea and were destroyed, causing great environmental pollution in the southern and northwestern seas of Sri Lanka.
Among the chemicals in the ship’s dangerous cargo, there was only one container of nitric acid, which caught the attention of many. However, the ship was carrying a large consignment of caustic soda, which was reported to be 42 containers. Also, 88 containers of urea belonging to three types were brought by Pearl Express and 8 containers of lead ingots were also found there.
In addition, several containers of methanol, a container treated as an environmentally hazardous chemical, perfume products, methanol, solid caustic soda, pharmaceutical and industrial product raw material, sodium methoxide solution, acetate vinyl inhibitors also among the dangerous cargo.
In addition to these materials, a large consignment of lubricants has also been transported there. As Lankasra learns there are bout 30 containers of lubricants, including engine oil, gear oil and brake oil, were stored there. It is believed that most of these stocks have been burnt.
In addition to these items, a consignment of food items, several vehicles, and a number of containers containing auto parts was being transported, and a total of 1215 containers of these containers were packed in 1886 containers while there were 271 empty tanks.
