2026 Commonwealth Games in Doubt as Victoria Cancels Hosting Plans

Security Concerns Led to Cancellation of 2026 Commonwealth Games

The 2026 Commonwealth Games, set to be hosted by the Australian state of Victoria, are now uncertain following the state’s decision to withdraw due to budget overruns. After struggling to find a host, the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) had secured Victoria’s volunteer hosting offer in April 2022. However, the estimated costs have now tripled, making it unfeasible for the state to proceed.

The cancellation of Victoria’s hosting plans has disappointed the CGF, which is determined to find a solution to keep the Games alive.

The Commonwealth Games are a quadrennial multi-sport tournament, only canceled once during World War Two. Competitors must be from one of the Commonwealth’s 56 member nations, most of which were formerly part of the British Empire.

Victoria’s Premier, Daniel Andrews, stated that while the state was initially willing to help, the projected costs had far exceeded expectations. Originally estimated at A$2.6 billion, the 12-day event was projected to cost over A$6 billion, more than double the expected economic benefits for Victoria. Despite completing stadium upgrades promised for the Games, the government will redirect the saved funds towards housing and tourism initiatives.

The CGF expressed disappointment, stating that they were blindsided by the decision and had not been given the opportunity to discuss possible solutions. The cost increase was attributed to Victoria’s unique regional delivery model, including decisions to add more sports and make changes to venues against the CGF’s advice.

The cancellation of the 2026 Commonwealth Games poses challenges for athletes who see the event as valuable preparation for the Olympics.

The cancellation may also impact non-Olympic sports like netball, potentially leading to the loss of players at both the grassroots and elite levels.

As Australia’s states have ruled out hosting the Games, the CGF and Australian authorities are hoping to find a viable solution. The difficulties in securing tournament hosts have been evident in recent years, with Durban, originally set to host the 2022 games, being stripped of hosting rights due to financial challenges. Birmingham eventually stepped in as the host, but cost concerns led several bidders to withdraw from the process for the 2026 Games, ultimately resulting in Victoria’s hosting offer in 2022.
