The General Manager of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has issued a written notice cancelling all employee leave with immediate effect, until further notice.

The directive follows an extraordinary gazette notification issued by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake on the 21st, declaring all services related to the supply of electricity as essential services. The gazette was signed under the powers vested in the President by Section 2 of the Essential Public Services Act No. 61 of 1979.

Meanwhile, the Ceylon Electricity Board Free Employees Association announced yesterday that, if a reasonable solution is not reached despite the restrictions, it will proceed with a strike in the electricity sector tomorrow (24), after consulting with other trade unions.
