A special discussion is currently underway between striking postal workers and the Minister in charge of the subject, Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa. Representatives from all postal trade unions involved in the strike have been summoned for the meeting, which commenced at 9 a.m. today.
Yesterday, the Minister stated that he was not prepared to discuss demands regarding increased overtime allowances or opposition to the use of fingerprint machines. However, he expressed willingness to address and reach agreements on other issues. The Minister also noted that two new fingerprint machines have been installed at the Central Postal Exchange and warned that the law would be enforced to its fullest extent if any pressure was exerted on postal workers who report to duty.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Postal Services Association, Jagath Mahinda, announced that many members who had joined the strike have since resumed duties. He added that postal services are expected to return to normal by tomorrow.
