A system failure in the Department of Motor Traffic has been identified as a deliberate act of sabotage by a group of its own employees, Deputy Minister of Transport Dr. Prasanna Gunasena revealed today. He stated that the department is currently under the control of corrupt individuals, and the destruction of its network system is the result of a rebellion led by these “thieves.”

Dr. Gunasena emphasized that the time for leniency with state officials is over and warned that stern action will be taken against those attempting to sabotage systems that serve the public.

He further stressed that strong measures will be enforced against anyone who tries to undermine the state mechanism, which has been endorsed by the overwhelming majority of the people. The Deputy Minister asserted that he is ready to confront those involved in corruption and is determined to ensure victory for the public and contribute to building a better nation.

Speaking to the media at the Kandy Railway Station today (17), regarding the ongoing train strike, the Deputy Minister clarified that the strike was not politically motivated but was due to administrative weaknesses.

He added that necessary actions will be taken against the administrative officers responsible.

“When we assumed office, we did not try to change or transfer officers immediately. We expected them to perform in line with the people’s expectations. We tolerated underperforming officers for a long time. Some of them who were initially discussed for transfers did not stay—they left early. Now, the group that supported them is being demoted, one by one. There’s no doubt about it. The President has also made that clear. We are systematically removing those who protected them,” he said.

“Within six months, we have identified officers who are willing to let go of old habits and work efficiently. We are moving forward with those officers. However, there are still some who refuse to adapt. Further action will be taken against them as well,” Dr. Gunasena concluded.
