President Anura Kumara Dissanayake emphasized that legal action will be taken not only against the individuals who illegally stopped buses on the Southern Expressway but also against the police officers who stood by and failed to act.
He firmly stated that such an incident should never have occurred. The President revealed that he has already obtained a list of the buses and the organizers responsible. He assured that the matter would be addressed according to the law of the country and that disciplinary measures would also be taken within his political party.
The President made these remarks during his appearance on the *Derana 360* political program. Responding to a question posed by the journalist about the blatant violation of rules and the police inaction, he acknowledged that a serious mistake had taken place and promised that it would be dealt with legally.
Explaining the situation, he said:
“I am not justifying this incident. I reviewed how this issue arose. These people came from remote areas. We had instructed them to come prepared for the May Day rally. They were not supposed to arrive and expect food or other provisions to be there.
“I inquired about the vehicles. I contacted Matara, Hambantota, Monaragala, Badulla, and Ampara last night. I asked for the details of each bus and the organizers responsible.”
He reiterated: “This is wrong. It should not have happened.”
Disciplinary action must be taken against the police officers who were present and did nothing. Additionally, action must be taken against the bus drivers who stopped illegally and the groups that supported them. The law must be enforced.
