Public Security Minister Vijitha Herath announced that six individuals, including a foreign national, have been arrested on suspicion of posing a threat to national security and the safety of tourists. Investigations are currently underway.
The arrests were made following intelligence reports indicating a potential attack in the Arugam Bay area and concerns about suspicious photography of economic landmarks in Colombo.
Commenting further, Minister Herath stated, “Recently, we received information suggesting a potential threat to foreign tourists. We took immediate action to ensure both national security and the safety of foreigners. Six individuals—a Maldivian national and five Sri Lankans—are now in custody and under interrogation. However, from the information gathered so far, we cannot yet determine the nature of the alleged plan. There is no need for any misunderstandings about this matter. Our primary commitment is to ensure the safety and security of the public and tourists.”
