Three individuals residing in the Aluthgama area have been arrested by the Aluthgama police for their involvement in the assault of a foreign couple visiting the country. The incident, which occurred at a renowned hotel in Beruwala, Moragalle, led to the arrest of the suspects after the police analyzed security camera footage.
The assault was reported by a Saudi Arabian national named Alsammar Nawaf Mufli, who was visiting the island with his partner. According to the police, the couple arrived in Sri Lanka on the 15th and was staying near a coffee restaurant at the hotel.
On the following day (16), three Sri Lankan individuals approached the couple and verbally abused the foreign woman without provocation. When asked about the reason for the insults, a physical altercation ensued, resulting in the Saudi Arabian man being struck in the face.
As the situation escalated, the foreign woman attempted to intervene and control the confrontation, but she too was attacked by the suspects, according to her statements to the police.
After the assault, the perpetrators fled the scene. However, thanks to the hotel’s security camera footage, the police were able to identify and apprehend the suspects.
The three individuals involved in the incident are now in custody and are scheduled to appear before the Kalutara Magistrate’s Court to face charges related to the assault.
The investigation is being led by Crime Branch officers, with Chief Inspector RK Ratnasingham supervising the case.
