The Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) has issued a warning that urgent action is required to address a series of proposals they have presented to the government. These proposals are aimed at resolving various issues, including the departure of doctors from the country. The association emphasizes that failure to address these issues could lead to a serious healthcare crisis for the people of the country.
Dr. Chamil Wijesinghe, the spokesperson for the GMOA, stated that if the government fails to provide swift solutions to the problems outlined in their proposals, they will initiate silent protests across all hospitals. Furthermore, if satisfactory solutions are not attained through these protests, the GMOA’s Central Committee will consider announcing a stronger course of action.
Dr. Wijesinghe highlighted the alarming statistic that approximately 1,500 doctors have already left the country, and an additional 5,000 doctors are prepared to do the same. This significant exodus of medical professionals could severely impact the operation of hospitals and healthcare services in the country if not addressed promptly.
