Sri Lankan researchers have discovered a new species jellyfish for the first time. It is a species of Box Jellyfish and so far only 50 species of Box Jellyfish have been found worldwide. The discovery was made by researchers Krishan D. Karunarathne and Dr. Dileepa de Croos of the Department of Aquaculture and Fisheries of the University of Wayamba.
The species has been named ‘Carybdea Wayamba’ in honor of the University of Wayamba in Sri Lanka. The research was funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF).
