Former Minister Palitha Thewarapperuma has said he intends to step down from the election fray. He had made these comments to the media at the Kalutara Superintendent of Police’s Office yesterday (07).
Thewarapperuma had visited the office to complain after his wife had been pushed and sustained injuries when the Police had attempted to remove a banner that had been put up for the almsgiving of his late son. According to Thewarapperuma, his wife is currently receiving treatment at the Nagoda Hospital.
Thewarapperuma told the media that he and his family are being constantly harassed by the Police since he announced his candidacy and is therefore now stepping down from the election fray due to its negative effects on his family. Thewarapperuma is a Kalutara district candidate for the United National Party. According to him he now intends to take care of his family rather than engage politics.
He said he will discuss the matter with the Assistant Elections Commissioner. Thewarapperuma blamed the Samagi Jana Balawegaya and his opposition towards Sajith Premadasa for the treatment meted out to him. He also stressed that the decision was made not due to any disagreement with the UNP or its leader Ranil Wickramasinghe. “I have explained this to the party by meeting the legal secretary of the party,” he said.
