A businessman has accused the Aralaganwila Police of brutally assualting him with sticks without cause on the night of December 08. According to the man Aralaganwila police officers who arrived in a police cab had started beating the man who had been standing in front of his place of business.
The assault victim has been identified as Indrajith Sandaruwan Rajapaksa (32), a businessman who runs a well known car dealership in Arangalawila.
On the day the victim had dropped off two friends at a resturant in the town and had waited in the car for them to return. According to him one of the friends had called him in distress claiming he had been stabbed. Rajapaksa had hurried to the restaurant to help him. After admitting the friend to the hospital he had once again returned to the restaurant in search of the other friend.
Rajapaksa said at the time a man identified as a prominent Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) supporter had already arrived on the scene. Rajapaksa had inquired as to what took place at the restaurant only to be verbally assaulted by this man. He claims he thereafter left the scene unwilling to get involved in the incident.
However later a team of Police officers had arrived at his business premises and commenced brutally assaulting Rajapaksa which was caught on CCTV camera. The Police had then attempted to take him away forefully but had been prevented by people in the area. He was later admitted to hospital for treatment and released on December 10.
Rajapaksa said he informed the OIC of the incident. “The OIC merely said he was not there at the time and what took place was not right” he said. He has now complained to the ASP in charge of Aralaganwila of the incident.
