Former State Minister and United National Party (UNP) candidate Palitha Thewarapperuma has been attacked today (22) evening by a group. Confidants of the former Minister have claimed that the attackers are connected to a rival camp. Thewarapperuma has suffered injuries to his left leg in the incident and is to also undergo surgery at the Nagoda Hospital.
The Matugama Police confirmed it had received a complaint stating that the former minister had been attacked. Sources said the Former Minister and several of his supporters had gone to inspect a potable water project being implemented in the Matugama area. Thewarapperuma and the contractors of the project had a disagreement during which the former Minister had been attacked, resulting in him falling into a drain at the site.
The Minister had gone to the site on a previous occasion as well and had a similar argument with the contractors and workers of the project. Matugama Police are investigating.
