The Navy apprehended a person with illegally harvested sea cucumber in the beach area of Arippu, Silawathura on Saturday (18).
The Navy has been playing a key role in the prevention of illegal fishing practices in the island’s waters, as it can cause a range of economic and environmental impacts. Accordingly, naval personnel attached to the Northwestern Naval Command, during a search in the beach area of Arippu, apprehended this suspect who had harvested 118 sea cucumbers.
The apprehended person has been identified as a resident of the Arippu West area, aged 38. The accused along with the illegally harvested sea cucumber was handed over to the Fisheries Inspector of Mannar for further investigation.
