The husband of the 52 year old woman who died while in quarantine after returning to Sri Lanka on December 17 has accused local authorities of neglect leading to his wife’s death. According to the husband, Indunil Deepthi Kumara his wife Dhammika Perera, a mother of one, had returned to Sri Lanka from Milan, Italy to undergo medical treatment.
However on January 1, her body was found inside the hotel room she was undergoing quarantine in. She was to complete her quarantine period on the same day.
“We informed those in the hotel to get her medical help due to the illness she was suffering because we were not able to contact her through the phone since she left. But the authorities have done nothing to help her. If they had shown her to a doctor this would not have happened” he said.
Kumara stressed that authorities should pay better attention and care to those being repatriated. “We are charged hundreds of thousands to go to Sri Lanka. If we are not allowed out of the rooms for anything then the government must shoulder all the responsibilities during the quarantine period.” he added.
“They have not looked after my wife, Dont do this to people. She did not have any illness to die. This would not have happened if she had got medical assistance” he said. The postmortem carried out on the woman has concluded that she had died after suffering a heart attack.
