The Western Provincial Director of the Urban Development Authority, Y.A.G.K Jayasinghe said that a preliminary plan is being prepared to construct a bicycle lane that will extend from the Colombo port city entrance to the Battaramulla Diyatha Uyana, connecting several cities.
According to a concept of President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, the Minister of Urban Development and Housing, the Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and the Minister of Urban Development, Coast Conservation, Solid Waste Disposal and Nalaka Godahewa has been authorized to implement this proposed project. The Director General of the Authority, N.P.K. Ranaweera and the Chairman of the UDA Harsha De Silva have accordingly been instructed, the Government Information Department said.
The project is targeted at school children, working people, local and foreign tourists and cyclists and aims to create a safe environment.The length of this lane which is planned to be constructed from the Colombo port city entrance to Battaramulla Diyatha Uyana is 23 km. The minimum width is 1.5 m and the maximum is 2.5 m.The project is scheduled to begin later this year and construction is expected to be completed by 2021.
